One: To Seek Perfection of Character
One: To Be Faithful
One: To Endeavor To Excel
One: To Respect Others
One: To Refrain From Violent Behaviour
The Dojo Kun literally means training hall rule "Dojo Rules" At Georgia Kissaki
Kai the Dojo Kun is recited by all of the students, at the end of each training
session. The purpose of reciting the Dojo Kun is to remind all of the students in
the dojo, regardless of their rank, that Karate is more than just physical. It is a set
of prescribed principles outlining the behaviours and attitudes expected to be
practiced.
Notice how they all start with the number one, this enables each to be just as
important as the one before or the one after.
A student should always strive to apply the principles of the Dojo Kun into daily
living, it must extend beyond the Dojo;s walls and into every day life. Students
who take the Dojo Kun seriously will develop a strong ethical sense and will
conduct themselves with honor and integrity.
The form of the dojo kun can vary from style or dojo to dojo, but in general the
basic ideas are the same.
(A serious student of Karate-do knows he/she must put there ethical and moral
standards above the rest of society then pattern their life around this pursuit of
excellence. Striving each day, to not only improve their technical ability but to
seek perfection of character, carving away any imperfections they may have. )
